Down But Not Out
May 9, 2022

If you read our blogs, you know we are very supportive of Ubiquiti equipment. We are so familiar with their products and technology that one of the services we promote on our website is Ubiquiti Unifi Specialists.

This past February we posted a blog titled “Sold Out” where we wrote: “…there are many benefits to sticking with Ubiquiti across the board. The equipment is cost effective and reliable. Integration across devices is consistent and seamless. And their platform will accommodate our own performance monitoring and management tools. For us, there is a lot of upside to sticking with Ubiquiti.”

Last September we posted a blog titled “When The Chips Are Down” where we stated: “The microchip shortage is hitting close to home for Jitterworks as well. We have a client for whom we designed a network and surveillance system. It required Ubiquiti cameras, switches, WiFi access points, a Network Video Recorder and network monitoring and management tools.” That project started in May of 2021 but could not be completed until four months later because we were unable to acquire the equipment we needed.

Obviously this problem is not unique to Ubiquiti but the chip shortage is hitting very close to home for them as well. The company recently released their third quarter earnings where they announced earnings of $351 million. That number is down over $100 million from their third quarter just one year ago.

Some nervous users are actually heading to the message boards to ask if Ubiquiti is still in business. Well they are and there are some things you can do to weather this storm. In the “Sold Out” blog, we wrote: “We keep a close eye on the Ubiquiti and other reseller websites to stay on top of what equipment is available…We also receive alerts when items we are looking for are back in stock. The challenge is getting in there and ordering these items as quickly as possible.

If you are a current UI customer, it is very important to maintain your existing equipment. Make sure you are running the most current versions of the Ubiquiti software and firmware. If this is something that is out of your area of expertise or comfort zone (many people subscribe to the theory of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”) there are Unifi specialists who can stay on top of things for you.

In fact, with the technologies that Ubiquiti provides users, it can often be done quickly, easily and remotely.
