From Here To Honduras
October 31, 2022

The definition of ubiquitous is “existing or being everywhere.” Ubiquiti, Inc. seems to be an appropriate name for the tech company we’ve mentioned often in our blogs and website.

The company has distributorships all over the world. But who would have thought that we would find a UniFi Wireless Access Point (WAP) on the ceiling of a small restaurant in a small town in Honduras?

A member of the JitterWorks team, Carl, was recently on a mission with the LAMB Institute – a charitable organization based in Charleston. The LAMB Institute’s mission is to “…care for, educate, protect, and empower those suffering extreme poverty, abuse, and exploitation in Honduras.”

He, along with about 14 other volunteers, were there to help LAMB on the property they run for underprivileged children. Daily tasks included renovating and painting buildings like the children’s home, school and daycare, working on the farm that provides food for the children that reside there and improving the water system. Just to name a few.

Since JitterWorks uses a lot of Ubiquiti equipment, the WAP jumped out at Carl. Though he was there to provide manual labor, he also took the opportunity to assess the network, WiFi and surveillance equipment on the property. Much of it was outdated or nonexistent.

JitterWorks arranged to send them the Ubiquiti UniFi equipment they needed. That’s when things got interesting. The employees on the property did not speak English so communication was an issue. Through the use of Google Meet and Google Translate, we were able to talk them through the process of setting up and configuring the equipment.

The employees charged with the task of setting up and configuring the equipment did an excellent job of understanding and executing and we give them a lot of credit. We also credit our familiarity with Ubiquiti equipment and procedures.

In the blog “Sold Out we stated: “You’re right, Ubiquiti is not the only manufacturer of switches, WiFi access points or any of the other equipment we use. And we might find it available elsewhere. The problem is, there are many benefits to sticking with Ubiquiti across the board. The equipment is cost effective and reliable. Integration across devices is consistent and seamless. And their platform will accommodate our own performance monitoring and management tools. For us, there is a lot of upside to sticking with Ubiquiti.”

And when we promote ourselves on our website as Ubiquiti UniFi Specialists who can set up, configure and manage their equipment, this is a perfect example of the proof of that concept.

Technology This Week

October 30, 1938 - There was panic in the streets of America on the eve of Halloween. Famed actor Orson Welles performed a radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic War Of The Worlds. He presented the fictional novel as a live radio news broadcast and many frightened people actually thought that Martians were invading New Jersey.
